Ultimate Comic Book Movie Guide We catch the early scoop on the Thor and X-Men sequels.

Ant-Man

Release Date: 2012
Development Status: Ant-Man and his sometimes wife The Wasp are two of the original five Avengers, and Marvel Studios have been trying for years to get an Ant-Man film off the ground. Currently, Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright is attached to direct the film, which he says will be an action-oriented movie with some humorous elements.

During interviews for Wright's Scott Pilgrim, Wright revealed the following about where the movie's story may potentially go: "It's essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power." Hank Pym, by way of Mission: Impossible, from the director of Shaun of the Dead? We're in.

Pixar has expressed an interest in distributing Ant-Man, leading many to wonder if the film will now be computer-animated instead of live-action. A second draft of the script by Wright and Joe Cornish has been turned in and Feige says it is the best one yet. They may be ready to shoot this soon.

It's not yet clear whether Ant-Man will be Wright's next directorial effort, but hopefully the film will see the light of day at some point in the wake of The Avengers.

The Avengers

Release Date: May 4, 2012
Development Status: Avengers Assemble! Norton's Hulk is out, and Mark Ruffalo is in as the new Bruce Banner in director Joss Whedon's Avengers. Also on the Hulk front, Ruffalo revealed that Hulk will go Smash! in 3D, with the help of motion capture - like they did on Avatar.

So, the official Avengers movie line-up includes: Nick Fury, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor, Cap, Hulk, Hawkeye and SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson. Jeremy Renner plays Hawkeye, and Cobie Smulders from How I Met Your Mother will play Fury's assistant at SHIELD, Maria Hill. And despite outright telling the press he wasn't in the movie, Tom Hiddleston will indeed reprise his Thor role as Loki in the film. Also Stellan Skarsgard, who plays Dr. Erik Selvig in Thor, will appear in Avengers as well.

Marvel overlord Kevin Feige revealed that The Avengers is a launching pad for Marvel's "new era" on the feature film front. "It will also renew each of these characters and launch them into their own franchises, starting with the second film to be released by Disney, Iron Man 3."

But what is it about? Loki's involvement gives credence to the rumors regarding the character using the Cosmic Cube to summon the Skrulls to invade Earth, an invasion which prompts Nick Fury to assemble his team of superheroes. Here is the film's official synopsis: "When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster."

According to Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, we will see the heroes fight each other in some capacity before teaming up to fight this "unexpected enemy."

Hawkeye himself, Jeremy Renner, recently revealed that his character's costume will be less purple, more "reality-based", taking a cue from Black Widow's outfit. (Spy his cameo in Thor.) Also, Renner said that Hawkeye and Black Widow will have some sort of relationship in the film. Speaking of costumes, Kevin Feige revealed that Iron Man will sport new armor in Whedon's movie, consistent with "the evolution" we saw Stark's armor take in IM 2. But what we want to know is, what is in store for Nick Fury?

Samuel L. Jackson's character seems poised to take point in the movie: "The Avengers is my own starring vehicle, pretty much," Jackson declared. The actor also revealed that he won't be in Thor, but will sport the eye-patch in Captain America.

So what's the story? Whedon dropped a few hints: "It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it." The writer-director implied that aspects of the plot will be taken from The Ultimates and the original comics. Whedon's script is believed to emphasize the family unit aspect of a group of heroes who really have no business teaming up, but, there they are... (According to Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, we will see the heroes fight each other in some capacity before teaming up to fight a greater threat.)

The Avengers assemble - but will Norton's Bruce Banner return?

Speaking of the story, production was recently halted when a copy of Jackson's script was stolen from the set and apparently shopped around by the thieves to various movie news websites. A handful of photocopied script pages have turned up online. On the plus side, the leaked script pages confirm that the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier will be in the movie.

The Avengers will now be the first Marvel Studios film to be distributed by Disney. As we recently learned, Disney acquired distribution rights to both The Avengers and Iron Man 3 from Paramount, who must not be happy campers at the moment.

But we are very happy, and eager, to see this movie on the big screen.
